This week, the theme is to:

Photograph under a bridge

An easy one for me this week! My photography friends think I live under a bridge somewhere because I take so many photographs of bridges. I’m considered something of a “bridge specialist”.

Bridges are meant to go over something, so we often focus on the top part, but this challenge isn’t just about taking photographs of bridges, it’s specifically about being under a bridge – you know with the trolls. Not necessarily a place to find a beautiful or interesting photograph.

Photo Under Clark Bridge

I love to photograph this bridge and visit often, but on this morning the sun shown perfectly on the concrete foundation – not the most attractive part of the bridge. This was the first time that I really understood how light could change something ordinary into something extraordinary.

Under the bridge is where you can find the infrastructure, the parts that create the bridge, but also leading lines (see the Weekly Challenge on Leading Lines). Look for light and lines that make this functional part of the bridge interesting.

Photo Boat under MacArthur Bridge

Photo Street By Ponte Vecchio

As long as you’re under the bridge, don’t forget to look up!

And of course, photographs may include people or things passing under a bridge or items found while you’re under a bridge.

Photo Water Taxi

A water taxi goes under a bridge in Chicago, Illinois.

So this week, find a bridge – a small bridge, a short bridge, a tall bridge, a functional bridge – and see if you can get underneath it for a photo.
