This week, the theme is to:

Photograph transportation

Planes, trains & automobiles – not to mention boats, bikes, buses, skateboards, trollies, and even hot air balloons. We’re surrounded by modes of transportation! Get your cameras ready.

I love this challenge! I’m always off to the The National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missouri. There are hundreds of old trains some restored and some falling into rust.

Photo Train Wheel

Only when standing next to a steam train at the National Museum of Transportation, can you appreciate the sheer size. This wheel must be 4-5 feet tall. I love to capture the texture of the worn metal and the shapes that create this massive machine.

I mainly go to the museum to photograph texture, but I’ve also been to the museum with models. The St. Louis steampunk crowd is always looking for photographers & we’re always looking for interesting models – a match made in heaven!

Do a quick search in your area to see if there’s a transportation museum handy, but even if you don’t look around for modes of transportation close to home – like at a real train station!
