Weekly Photo Challenge: Something Borrowed

This week, the theme is to:

Photograph Something Borrowed

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue….

You don’t just have to think weddings this week, but a summer wedding would be appropriate.

So grab your camera this week – or better still, borrow someone else’s – and go see what you can negotiate.

Product photography works. Anything is fair game this week — as long as you don’t own it. I borrowed a dozen pairs of worn ballet slippers for a photo shoot.

Pair of battered pink ballet shoes with a mound of slippers behind in shadow.

Stop by your neighbor’s house and ask for a cup of sugar – or play in their garden for a while. At least you’re not asking to borrow their lawnmower.

I don’t take many photos of flowers, but I was out practicing with my new macro lens and couldn’t resist photographing one of my neighbor’s flowers.

There’s any number of things you can borrow from friends, family, neighbors, random strangers on the street…. All you want is a quick photograph – you’ll give it right back!

This fellow in Cuba wanted my hat and I got his – a permanent form of borrowing!

Playing Dominoes

Trading caps. This fellow wanted my blue baseball cap – I got his revolutionary hat instead. Score! Old Havana, Cuba.

Found objects also work.

Maybe this is the week to borrow – rent – a fancy car or some studio space for some photography practice.

Or borrow some time to do a little extra photography.

You can even borrow an idea. Find a photo that inspires you and try to recreate it. Imitation is the best form of flattery. I was using a photograph that I’d found on Pinterest as an inspiration for this photograph to practice my lighting techniques in the studio. What do you think?

Photo Kenya

I rarely process portraits in black and white, but I wanted to focus on the lighting that highlighted Kenya’s face and form.
